Its capital Chiang Rai has a predominant café culture, as Thailand’s best beans are grown in the more remote areas. Make sure to support BaanChivitMai Bakery whose profits go to orphaned or Aids affected children. Chiang Rai has a relaxed atmosphere and is a great starting point to visit the more remote areas of Thailand.
Start your holiday to Thailand:
Partake in a guided trek, and traverse the villages of Mae Yao District, north of Chiang Rai, many of which whose profits go back to the local area and create jobs.
Nestled in the hills outside of Chiang Rai, is Doi Mae Salong. A strong Chinese presence is felt here as it was settled by Chinese soldiers who fled communist rule in 1945. The food has a strong Chinese influence and Chinese is still the predominant language. Why not enjoy a horseback trek and take in the scenery from a remote perspective?
Make the journey to Pai. Set in a picturesque valley setting this town has grown in popularity due to its art scene, temples, and bustling markets. Relax and head to one of its waterfalls and dip in its cool waters. If you are feeling more adventurous, rafting and kayaking tours are available.
