OUR TOP PLACES TO VISIT IN TASMANIA
HOBART
Visit capital city Hobart with its historic waterfront, found on the edge of the River Derwent, famous for its art and food scene. This second oldest city in Australia has lots to see and do, so we recommend spending two full days here. Spend an afternoon admiring all the pieces in MONA (museum of old and new art).
Tempt your tastebuds at Cascade Brewery followed by a wander around Salamanca Markets, for delicious organic fruit and vegetables (open on Saturdays). Mount Wellington looms over the city and is a brilliant spot for bushwalking and a picnic! Head to the pier for a day trip to Bruny Island for a wildlife exploration. Look out for seals, white wallabies, dolphins & penguins (the smallest in the world). Follow the Cape Bruny lighthouse tour for an explanation into this former convict site.
Spend at least half a day at Port Arthur. This former British Penal Colony is extremely well preserved. There are several different tours available, including the commandant’s tour and escape from Port Arthur Tour.
Begin your holiday to Hobart:
Launceston
If you have several weeks in Tasmania its worth visiting its second largest city, Launceston. A great place to see lots of colonial architecture and beautiful parks. Not far from the centre is the striking Cataract Gorge. Visit the Victorian gardens, stop for a drink in the café…you can even go for a swim in the pool! Launceston itself is a gateway town to vineyards, lakes and highlands.
Freycinet National Park
Head to Tasmania’s east to admire the pink granite ranges, isolated bays and coastal towns. A go to area for hikers and fans of the outdoors; go bushwalking, rock climbing or kayaking. Treat yourself and stay in a deluxe eco-lodge. Make sure to bring your binoculars, as the birdwatching is fantastic. A must do excursion... visit breathtaking Wineglass Bay, only reached by boat trip or on foot.
Cradle Mountain
Discover translucent lakes, ancient rainforests and incredible scenery in this Tasmania Wilderness World Heritage area. Do one of the many day hikes around this unusually shaped mountain for amazing views. You can even join a horse riding tour. Or, if you are feeling particularly energetic there’s always the Cradle Mountain-6 day Overland Trek.
Strahan
Visit this wonderful harbourside village for a fascinating insight into its historical past. Walk to Hogarth Falls and try and spot the iconic platypus. We recommend joining a boat tour on the Gordon River.
