3. Food and Drink
Fresh fish and seafood are popular …conch shellfish is even considered an aphrodisiac! For dessert, try Guava Duff, steamed pudding with rum sauce.
Sip Sky Juice, (gin, coconut water and condensed milk), Kalik Beer and rum. The estate of John Watling’s rum distillery was even featured in James Bond’s ‘Casino Royale’.
4. History
The Bahamas colonial legacy lives on in churches, forts and colonial buildings. Head to the colourful capital, NASSAU, and climb the 66 rock steps carved out of the limestone by slaves from 1793-94. Called the Queen’s Staircase, they link to Fort Fincastle, which was built by the British to deter pirates.
5. Culture
Locals call their unique music ‘Junkanoo’… a mix of European and African vibes. The colourful Junkanoo National Festival has parades, dancers and musicians, with the main events on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
Flight Time
The Bahamas are a 9-10 hour flight from the UK.
