3. Ancient Ruins
The Tomb of the Kings in Paphos is a UNESCO World Heritage Site...they weren’t used by royalty but got the name because of their grand appearance. Paphos’ archaeological site dates from 4th century BC and has beautiful mosaics based on Ancient Greek myths. Ancient Kourion has an amphitheatre, mosaics and beautiful views. Choirokoitia is an ancient Neolithic site from 7000 BC and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
4. Fabulous Cities and Towns
NICOSIA, with its 16th century walls and cobbled streets, has superb art galleries and museums.
Cosmopolitan and buzzing, Limassol Old Town is full of character. Check out the castle and Folk Art Museum.
5. Food and Drink
With Greek, Lebanese, British and Arabic influences, the cuisine is unique. Visit Lemesos (Limmasol) for an upmarket dining experience or Nicosia for a comprehensive range of dishes. Try dolmades, (stuffed vine leaves), gyros and stifado (a rich stew). Mezes, (lots of small dishes), are a great way to sample different choices. Halloumi cheese made from goat’s and cow’s milk gives many dishes their own unique flavour. Fresh local ingredients ripened in the sunshine, locally reared meats and freshly caught seafood form the basis of superb dishes. Red, white and rose wines, Commandaria dessert wine, ouzo, zivania brandy, brandy sour and local Keo beer will ease your thirst.
