WHY VISIT ANDROS?
1. Hiker’s paradise
The centre of Andros has excellent walking terrain. There are approximately 25 hiking trails,
ranging from 30 mins to 6 hours with wild mountains, valleys, watermills and waterfalls waiting for you. Check out the springs of Dionysus and Menites and hunt for hidden monasteries and churches, while ambling by olive groves, citrus, fig, mulberry and walnut trees and vineyards. The ravine of Pythara is known as ‘fairyland’ with its waterfalls and ponds.
2. Beaches
There are many lovely beaches on the island which are perfect for families, and although the sea water may be cold off some of them there are warmer spots! Sandy Golden Beach is protected from the wind, and Fellos is large with shade from the trees. Nimborio and the beaches by Batsia and Gialia are all picturesque and very good.
3. Sporting activities
It’s possible to have guided walking tours on the island and mountain biking, boat trips, scuba diving and rock climbing are all on offer. Fishing off the rocks is also a popular pastime. On the eastern side of the island, surfing and windsurfing for novices and advanced levels is possible with the strong NE winds.
4. Andros Town (Hora)
Andros town is an upmarket town. Check out its neo classical mansions, churches,
archaeological museum and Museum of Contemporary Art, with works by Matisse and
Kandinsky.
5. Spectacular sites
There are many ancient ruins to view...there are remains of a Venetian castle on a small rock in Andros Town. Don’t attempt crossing the unsafe stone bridge to it. Aidonia has ruined tower houses. Another top attraction is the Aladino Cave with its stalagtites and stalagmites.
