Paleokastritsa is calm, perfect for snorkelling and young children. Dassia is a Blue Flag beach and Arillas perfect for families. If you swim through the natural tunnel of Canal d’ Amour with your partner, legend says you will soon get married! Kavos is the party beach while Chalikounas and Prasoudi are peaceful.
2. Corfu Town (Kerkyra)
The Old Town of this multi-cultural capital is a UNESCO site. The winding, cobbled streets house bars, restaurants, clubs and live music venues, so a buzzing nightlife is guaranteed! Shop in boutique shops or local shops, selling artisan jewellery, leather goods and souvenirs. Head to the stylish Liston Arcade for a fabulous experience. Corfu Town is nestled between two Venetian fortresses, Paleo Frourio and Neo Frourio, which have outstanding views. Visit some of the many churches, the interesting Museum of Asian Art and Mon Repos Palace (now a museum), birthplace of the late Duke of Edinburgh.
3. Historical Sites
With English, Venetian, Russian and French influences, there are a wide variety of historical sites to visit. Stunning 13th century Paleokastritsa monastery, situated on a rocky headland. Remains of 13th century castle, Angelokastra, perched 300m above SL, with stunning views. The mostly abandoned village of Perithia is well worth visiting, as is Vlacherna monastery situated on an islet. Take a boat trip from here to Mouse Island (Pontikonisi), where legend says Ulysses ship was turned to stone by Poseidon.
4. Activities
Swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving, jet skiing, waterskiing, wake boarding, paragliding...take a boat trip to explore small islands off Corfu, such as Vidos Island with its tranquil beaches. Bird watching is popular on the protected nature reserve of Korission lagoon. Go inland, on bicycle or foot, and explore the CORFU TRAIL. This 222 km hike meanders from the south of the island to the north, and takes approximately 10 days, but you can break it down to smaller sections. With the gorgeous coastline, beaches, picturesque villages, hills, mountains, lakes and lagoons, be at one with nature at its best.
5. Food and Drink
Sample traditional Greek food on the island and unique Corfiot cuisine with influences of many cultures, especially Italian. Try Pastitsada, a chicken or beef red wine and pasta dish. Fish Bianco, fresh fish, wine and potatoes or Bourdeto (fish stew). Sip Metaxa brandy, local wines and ouzo.
