WHICH PART OF HALKIDIKI WILL YOU CHOOSE?
Kassandra Peninsula:
This upmarket westernmost ‘leg’ with its luxury resorts is the most popular, especially with families, couples and adventurers. In Greek mythology it was the battleground to banish gods from Mount Olympus.
It’s renowned for its natural beauty, annual festivals and splendid beaches. Watersports are great in this region as are climbing, riding and cycling. In summer the area buzzes and Kalithia has a good nightlife. The Sani resort and its festivals are especially popular while sandy Possidi Cape is backed by pine forest. Agia Paraskevi has thermal spas and pools.
Sithonian Peninsula:
This middle ‘leg’ is quieter and more laid-back, with generally secluded beaches and coves, pine forests, olive groves and traditional villages. It’s especially popular with families with the southern tip, Kalamitsi, also excellent for watersports and diving.
Athos Peninsula:
The easternmost ‘leg’ and the most isolated .The seaside town of Ouranoupoli with its Byzantine tower is open to all, as is the 10th century ruined monastery of Zyrgou. However, only male visitors with a special permit can proceed past the policed border to the World Heritage site of Mount Athos, with a spiritual tradition dating back 1700 years. This is the only monastic state in Europe with approximately 20 monasteries inhabited by 1400 monks. If you are intrigued, catch a glimpse of some of these spectacular monasteries with a boat trip from Ouranoupoli, which legally keeps 500m from shore.
