Why Visit KOS?
1. Fantastic beaches
With 70 miles of coastline there are lots of excellent beaches of all types with many having
watersports facilities. Kardamena is very busy with shallow water while Kamila and Limnionas are quieter. The sea pool at Agios Fokas is believed to have ‘healing properties.’
2. Diverse history
Kos has many old forts, buildings and ancient artefacts throughout the island. For outstanding
views head to 14th century Antimachia Castle, built by the Knights of St John. The beach as St
Stephen has ruined temples alongside.
3. Kos Town
The island’s lively capital has a lovely mix of shops, eateries and monuments. Situated in the NE of the island, stroll along the harbour and new marina. Head to Eleftherias (Liberty) Square and see the city walls, mosque and archaeological museum which has a statue of the famous healer Hippocrates who was born on Kos. See the ‘Plane Tree of Hippocrates,’ too young to be the tree which legend says Hippocrates taught under, but still epic.
The local market is the place to go to pick up local produce and souvenirs. Also worth visiting isCasa Romana, a restored Roman villa with displays on Roman life and mosaics. Be sure to
explore the Venetian Castle of Neratzia dating from 14th century and built by the Knights of the
Order of St John. The views are outstanding too! Just north of town is an Asclepius or healing
shrine, dating from 4th century BC.
4. Food and Drink
There are many good eateries on Kos and wine tasting is popular too! Try Katimeria cheese pies and Pasa Makarouna ( meat, cheese and filo). Olive oil and honey are produced on Kos too.
5. Mountain villages
Although Kos is relatively flat, the SE is the most mountainous, with Dikeos mountain rising to
846m. Guided walking tours are available or perhaps hike from Zia village to the Church of Christ at the top. The climb isn’t easy so take lots of water! Zia is a tourist honey pot, but other villages to explore include those at Astendiou, the largely abandoned Agios Dimitrios and Palio Pyli. This was a medieval village but now abandoned with 2 churches remaining.
