Holiday to Lefkada (Levkada, Lefkas)
Often called ’The Caribbean of Greece,’ cosmopolitan Lefkada is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea off the west coast of Greece. It’s joined to the mainland of Greece by a swing bridge over the canal that opens up to let yachts pass through.
The beaches are some of the nicest in the whole of Greece and it’s a top destination for watersports. With super hiking trails over verdant mountains and hills, gushing waterfalls and a rich history and culture.
Lefkada is popular for summer holiday breaks or what about a twin-centre holiday with Parga on the mainland. Start your holiday to Lefkada today.
Why Visit Lefkada?
1. Outstanding beaches
There are more than 20 beaches on the island, with most long and sandy. Many have facilities.
Pefkoulia is beautiful but busy in summer. Mylos beach on the west coast is undeveloped.
Kathisma beach (west coast) is popular with its white pebbles and gorgeous sunsets. Beautiful
Egremni can now only be reached by boat since the earthquake of 2015 destroyed its steps.
Vassiliki is one of Europe’s best windsurfing resorts.
2. Watersports and activities
As well as swimming and snorkelling in the crystal clear turquoise sea, scuba diving, sailing,
yachting, kite surfing, windsurfing and paragliding are all available. Hiking the trails in the
mountains of Elati and the plateau of Eglouvi, with its wells and stone volti (summer houses for
farmers) is popular.
The hike to Nydri waterfalls is worth it for the cool dip after! Mountain biking and horse riding are also possible as is bird watching, especially in the lagoon and protected wetland between the island and mainland.

3. History and Culture
Legend has it that Lefkada is the birthplace of Aphrodite. The capital, Lefkada Town, is charming with its gardens and views at the monastery Moni Faneromeni. Stroll to the 14th century fortress of Agia Maura and the archaeological museum with information on the island’s history. We recommend driving to hill villages to see local crafts, taste traditional food and see traditional dress still worn by older women.
4. Natural scenery
Lefkada has a rich fauna and flora... olive groves, cypress, plane, oak and willow trees and
spring flowers, with steep rugged hillsides, mountains of Elati and plateau of Eglouvia with its
famous lentils. From the beaches to mountain tops, canyons, caves, natural springs, rivers and
waterfalls you will see nature at its best.
5. Food and drink
Well known for its wine, thyme, honey, citrus fruits and olive oil, each village in Lefkada has its own unique and different recipes. Spicy sausage and salamis and Savoro (fish cooked in
rosemary, garlic and onions), Ladopita pies and Madolato dessert are some of the traditional
foods you must try.
