Why Visit Lesvos?
1. Stunning diverse landscape
From mountains, olive groves, rivers, hot springs, pine and hardwood forests to more than 200 caves on the island, many unexplored, with some associated to Neolithic times. There are masses of wildflowers, birds and rare insects on Lesvos and a unique 20 million year old petrified forest, formed from intense volcanic activity. All waiting to be explored...
2. Beautiful beaches
With more than 350 kms of coastline, and turquoise seas, there is a beach to suit all tastes. Calm and pebbly Eftalous is family friendly, while the Blue Flag volcanic sands of Skala Eresses are well organized. The traditional fishing village of Petra has a sandy beach as does Anaxos.
3. Activities
Lesvos is one of Europe’s leading birdwatching destinations, especially near the salt lakes close to Kalloni. Spring and autumn is especially popular for migratory birds and flamingos.
Swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving in the turquoise seas and hiking, mountain biking, horse riding and rock climbing are all possible. What about a glass bottomed boat trip to see all the treasures of the sea?
4. Rich History and Culture
Visit the traditional village of Molyvos dating from the Ottoman era, with its steep, cobbled stone streets and Byzantine castle. You will have stunning views of the Aegean and Turkey. The port and capital, Mytilini, has a Medieval castle and market place and great eating and drinking establishments. The Teriade museum has paintings by Picasso and Matisse and local painter Theophilos.
The volcanic village of Eressos attracts many for its links to Sappho, the ancient Greek poet thought to be born here and for its old monasteries. Climb the steps to Petra’s Panagia Glykofilousa or ‘church of sweet kisses.’ The monasteries of Taxiarchis and Saint Raphael are well worth exploring, as is the museum of Barbayannis Ouzo, where you can also taste and buy ouzo.
5. Food and Drink
Lesvos offers good value for food and drink. It produces approximately half of the world’s ouzo supply and is also famous for its olive oil production. Sardines, mussels and freshly caught fish feature strongly on the menus. Try ladotryri cheese, a favourite of the island and pumpkin flowers with feta.
