Shimmering Skiathos Holidays
With more than sixty gorgeous beaches, superb weather and turquoise seas, the island of Skiathos is tiny, but is a tremendous and popular destination for families and couples seeking a beachside holiday.
Located in the NW Aegean Sea, and part of the Sporades group, it is well known as scenes from ‘Mamma Mia!’ were filmed here. There’s a lively nightlife in the cosmopolitan Skiathos Town and full range of eateries to suit all tastes and budgets, but the beach resorts are much quieter for those seeking chilled evenings enjoying a meal with drinks. The interior of the island has lush green hills waiting to be explored.
Fancy a beach holiday with your family? Or a multi-island stay in the Sporades? You could even go island hopping or sail around the islands. Start your Skiathos holiday:
Our top 5 reasons for visiting Skiathos:
1. More than 60 stunning beaches
Family friendly beaches of soft sand are on the south, whereas the north has fewer, quieter beaches. Koukounaries has aquamarine waters, gentle shelves and a protected forest around it. Big Banana beach is well known and popular while Little Banana beach is for nudists. Troulos, Achladies, Agia Paraskevi and Kolios are smaller and quieter resorts.
2. Sports & boat trips
There are a full range of water sports activities, swimming, snorkelling, diving, waterskiing, sailing...why not hire a boat or take a boat trip around the island? Go hiking or horse riding in the island’s lush interior.
3. Nightlife, entertainment & shopping
Enjoy the hustle and bustle of Skiathos Town...head to ‘Bar street’ or the ‘disco strip’ for the liveliest entertainment. The main streets are traffic free with cafes, jazz and cocktail bars, restaurants, tavernas and boutique and designer shops. There’s also an open air cinema showing English language films!
4. History and culture
The capital, Skiathos Town, with its two yacht harbours, is the only unique Greek town on the island. Stroll through the cobbled streets and visit the museum of Papadiamantis, who lived and worked on the island and wrote more than 200 short stories mainly about Greek island life.
At Kastro, see the remains of what was once the biggest medieval town on the island. The monastery, Evangelistria, is also a peaceful location with stunning views and here you can buy reasonably priced wine made by the monks.
5. Food and drink
Fresh fish, olives, figs and honey feature widely on the menus. Try Mezedes, the bitensized meat, fish and vegetable dishes, with a glass of local wine and a shot of ouzo.
