Top 5 reasons for visiting Skopelos:
1. Beaches
There are all types of beaches. Calm & pebbly Panormas is popular, with stunning views, but shelves away quickly. Watersports and boat hire are available here. Stafylosis is excellent for snorkelling with amazing sea life. Walk ten minutes to the other coast and the quieter Venania beach. Milia is one of the longest, sandy beaches. Amarantos is a beautiful, hidden rocky cape to swim in.
2. Hiking
Take the old footpaths through the mountains, pine forests and olive groves which lead to monasteries and chapels... best done in Autumn or Spring when it isn’t so hot! Over 80 percent of the island is forested and there are approximately 360 churches and chapels, so there’s much to explore.
3. Skopelos Town & Glossa...history and culture
Picturesque Skopelos Town, located above the port, has the most night-life on the island with restaurants, jazz bars, music bars and tavernas. Try the traditional Skopelos cheese pie and fish stew ‘rofos stifado.’ The fascinating folklore museum shows 200 years of life on the island through objects. Kastro is the old quarter, set high above the town, with ruins of a Venetian castle and outstanding sea views.
Glossa, perched 300m up a hillside in the NW of the island, has whitewashed buildings, Macedonian architecture, and ruins of 5th century temple to Athena. The 17th century monastery Timios Prodromos, 7 km from Glossa, is open to the public. The 1889 lighthouse Gourouni, in the north of the island, is one of the oldest in Greece.
4. Activities
Swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving are the main activities. Painting courses, yoga and meditation retreats are also available. Take a day cruise to the largest protected marine area in Europe ‘National Park of Alonnisos and the Northern Sporades’...see Mediterranean monk seals and the ancient sunken city of Psathoura.
5. ‘Mamma Mia’ locations!
Beach scenes for the film were shot on gorgeous Kastani beach, a superb location for swimming and snorkelling. The wedding scenes were outside Agios Ioannis Kastri Church...climb the 112 steps carved into rock and be amazed at the stunning views.
