WHY VISIT THE PELOPONNESE?
1. Stunning unspoilt beaches
We feel Greece’s best beaches are located in the Peloponnese and you have a wide choice of
sandy or pebbly beaches, with some long and well organised and others hidden and only
reached by boat.
Semi –circular Voidokoilia (near Pylos) is absolutely stunning, with white sand dunes and no facilities to protect its beauty. Foneas (Mani) is in a naturally protected cove and popular in the summer. See the shipwreck at sandy Selinitsa beach (Mani). The beaches around the luxurious resort of Porto Heli are popular.
2. Masses of history
The many civilizations in the region have left their mark...Ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, hosted here for 1000 years and where the Olympic torch is still lit, with its ruined temple to Zeus. Monemvasia, the medieval and dramatic walled city. The ancient theatre at Epidavros, and the ancient historic site at Mycenae. Ancient ruins at abandoned Mystras, the former Byzantine capital and fortress town. The pretty waterside town of Nafplio, with its mosques, churches and outstanding views from Palamidi citadel...
3. Gorgeous scenery
Snow topped mountains, gorges, forests of fir, oak and plane, olive groves and vineyards. The
Neda River with its gorge of pools and waterfalls, the lakes at Polylimnio near Kalamata, caves at Kastania which are among the best in Europe!
4. Hiking, Diving and Climbing
Hiking through the rugged mountains, gorges, forests and coastal paths. Mani is beautiful when the spring flowers are blooming-see the traditional tower houses (family forts). The Menalon Trail (75 km divided into 8 sections) in Arcadia is one of Europe’s finest trails. The stunning Vouraikos gorge can be hiked or you can travel on the unique rack and pinion train!
The crystal clear turquoise sea makes the region popular for snorkelling and diving. Simos on Elafonisos Island, just off the southern coast is popular with divers who seek the sunken city of Pavlopetri. There are 100’s of rock climbing routes in Badron Gorge, suitable for varying levels.
5. Food and Drink
World famous Kalamata olives, cured meats, pork, dairy products, aubergines and oranges are all produced/grown here. Freshly caught seafood cooked superbly. Sweet wines and deep reds from local wineries. What about a tasting tour?
