WHY VISIT ZAKYNTHOS?
1. Gorgeous beaches
The tourist hot spots are on the south of the island, which has excellent beaches, with some undeveloped while others very busy and popular. Porto Roma is peaceful, while Laganas and Kalamaki are very busy and popular. Banana beach is the longest beach. Nicholas Bay is popular for canoeing, watersports and paragliding.
2. Sporting Activities
Snorkelling and scuba diving are excellent in the crystal clear sea, especially around the Blue Caves in Skinari. Glass bottomed boat trips are possible for those who want to see the
underwater world a different way. You may even see the endangered loggerhead turtles!
Kayaking, extreme sports, cycling, hiking and horse riding on the beach are all popular activities.
3. Nightlife
For beach parties and very lively bars and clubs, head to Laganas Bay.
4. Stunning scenery and important sights.
Although the south of the island is touristy, the rest of the island is a forested wilderness with rural villages waiting to be explored. With lemon groves, vineyards and luxuriant vegetation in the interior, scenic beaches on the Vasilikos peninsula and limestone cliffs on the west coast, the natural world of Zakynthos is a delight . Many buildings were destroyed in the 1953 earthquake, but there are Venetian style buildings in Zakynthos town and a museum of Byzantine art.
For stunning views head to the church of Agios Dionysios and the farmer’s market for local produce and souvenirs. 14th century Anafonitria monastery and the famous shipwreck at Navagio Bay, which can only be visited by boat, are well worth visiting.
5. Food and Drink
There are a full range of eating establishments, from fine dining restaurants to beach bars and
tavernas. Try Spetsofai stew, made from sausages, aubergines and peppers, and frigania creamy dessert. Zakynthos if also famous for its fresh seafood and the olive oil it produces. Be sure to sample local wines, Greek beer or ouzo.
