WHY VISIT ALENTEJO?
1. Stunning coastline & undiscovered beaches.
Here are our favourites...
- The tranquil TROIA peninsula, with its 11 mile soft, white sandy beach and calm, turquoise sea.
- Almograve beach in Odemira is one of the most beautiful beaches in the region, one side backed by rocks and cliffs, the other dunes.
- Comporta is one of the most exclusive destinations in Europe. It has a unique port made entirely from wood which is balanced on stilts.
2. Watersports
A full range of watersports are on offer, from inland lakes and waterways to the coast. Surfing, windsurfing, kite surfing, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, diving, sailing, fishing... take your pick!
3. Hiking & other land sports
Hiking and trekking along the coast or inland are very popular. The Rota Vicentina are 2 walking trails, coastal or inland. The coastal, or ‘fishermen’s trail,’ starts at Porto Cova, totals 120 km with 4 sections and runs along the SW coast. It is more challenging than the inland ‘historical way’ with its 12 sections over 230 km through the Parque Natural with its cork, oak and olive trees. Mountain bikes are also allowed on this trail which goes to Cabo de Sao Vicente as does the ‘fisherman’s trail.’
Cycling, horse riding, golfing, sky diving, paragliding and bird watching are other activities to do in Alentejo.
4. Go back in time...
The medieval city of EVORA is a World Heritage site. It has an impressive 2nd Century Roman temple, cathedral and Capela dos Ossos, a unique and gruesome chapel made of human bones. On the outside of town visit the neolithic Cromeleque do Almendres, with its 95 standing stones.
The medieval walled town of MARVAO has a stunning castle with spectacular views towards Spain. ELVAS has the largest fortified bastion in the world, impressive aqueduct, castle, churches and cathedral. VILA VICOSA is famous for its marble palace and castle.
5. Food and drink
Alentejo is considered one of the best red wine regions in the world, so go on a wine tour. Traditionally the world famous black pork, lamb and bread are the staples of the region. Try the popular migas com carne... bread cubes fried with meat, garlic and paprika. Fresh seafood along the coast is renowned.
