WHY VISIT THE SILVER COAST OF PORTUGAL?
1. Dramatic Silver Coast (Costa de Prata) beaches & water sports
The Silver Coast is perfect for those wanting a relaxing and tranquil holiday, sunbathing and swimming in beautiful surroundings or if you want to take part in a range of active water sports.
Nazare is famous for its enormous waves, and a beacon for surfers from all over the world. The beaches of Peniche, Tocha, and Baleal are great for surfing. Many of the beaches are Blue Flag, while Obidos lagoon, popular with the Portuguese and family-friendly, is great for learning to sail, wind surf, kite surf and kayak. In the evening, try fresh seafood in the seaside restaurants, sip local wine and watch a gorgeous sunset.
2. Historic towns
- There are many to choose from, such as Coimbra, known as the ‘Oxford of Portugal’, this UNESCO world heritage site is famous for its university founded in 1290. A medieval capital for more than one hundred years, visit for its 12th century cathedral, Romanesque architecture and lively energy when students are partying in local bars. Listen out for the traditional, haunting fado music made by a solo singer and classic Portuguese guitar.
- Tomar-this quiet yet fascinating town is a must if you are interested in history and culture. Once the ancient stronghold of the Knight’s Templar in the Convento de Christo, it is now a UNESCO world heritage site.
- Obidos-for a stunningly beautiful location, look no further than this walled, traditional Portuguese town. Amble around the walls and cobbled streets and check out the medieval castle. Nearby is the West Cliffs Golf Course, opened in 2017, and voted the world’s best new course.
3. Remote mountains to explore
The Serra da Estrela mountain range is a protected National park, and at 1993m is the highest point in Portugal. Beautiful to drive around or hike, with several walking trails lasting 1 to 4 days, it is also home to Portugal’s only ski resort.
