WHY VISIT MENORCA?
1. FANTASTIC beaches and stunning coves...more than Mallorca and Ibiza combined! Mostly Blue Flag beaches, with fine white sand in the South and slightly darker and rockier beaches in the North. Nearly all have shallow falls, making them more suitable for children and also means the turquoise sea is warmer!
Son Bou has the longest sandy beach, and is a family favourite, as is Playa de Binigaus. There are many opportunities for beach side sporting activities. Sea kayaking is popular off the island, as is snorkelling, water skiing, windsurfing and sailing.
2. Fascinating cities
Mahon, the capital, and Ciutadella, a former capital, are both fascinating cities oozing charm and culture. Ciutadella, a picturesque port, dates from the 1300’s. Look out for the gold –tinged buildings in the old quarter and the gothic Cathedral Basilica.
Mahon has many historical remnants. Seek out the Fortress of Isabel 2nd, for outstanding late 19th century military architecture, and the Museo of Menorca. Stroll along the harbour, one of the longest natural harbours in the world, for great views and boat trips.
3. Historic paths & Bronze Age megaliths
The Cami de Cavalls dates from Medieval times, and is a varied and beautiful historic pathway dissecting the whole island. Almost every resort will have a cami going through it. 184 km long and divided into 20 sections, it is waiting for you to explore on foot, with parts also suitable for horse riders and mountain bikes.
Well worth exploring are the Bronze Age megaliths; Torre d’ en Galmes, Necropolis de Cala Morell (with its 14 burial chambers) and the largest Talayotic settlement in the Ballearics, Son Catlar, with its 5 talayots (Bronze Age megaliths in the form of a tower).
4. Shopping, entertainment & eateries
For a disco/bar with a difference, head to the cliff caves, Cova d’ en Xoroi, at Cal’n Porter. There are elegant eateries in Ciutadella and Mahon, wine bars and top notch boutiques, and some clubs in Ciutadella. Check out the Monday evening market in Ciutadella, for local artisan buys, and the bric-a-brac market in Mahon. Here you have a gin factory to visit and even a horse trotting show. Sample the famous Mahon cheese (similar to Cheddar) and indulge in the array of fresh fish and shellfish. Sample a lobster or fish casserole or arroz marinera, seafood with saffron infused rice. Menorca is the birthplace of mayonnaise, so definitely give allioli a go.
