WHY VISIT BILBAO?
Indulge in exquisite cuisine as Bilbao is one of the areas with the most Michelin stars per person in the world. Fancy some Pintxas (regional form of tapas) and Txakol wine? Head to Plaza Neuva with its many busy bars, cafes and restaurants. For dessert be sure to try the regional speciality, Bollos Mantequill. Fresh Basque produce can be bought and sampled at the Mercado de la Ribera; mingle with the locals while enjoying live music.
Visit the Guggenheim museum, designed by American architect, Frank Gehry. Built in 1997 from mainly titanium and chrome plates, it is a world-renowned symbol of modern architecture and full of modern and contemporary art treasures. On the outside you will find Jeff Koon’s El Poopy sculpture, filled twice a year with living plants.
The Fine Arts museum and Basque museum are also worth visiting. Stroll around the narrow winding streets of the old town, with more than 700 years of history, and seek out the cathedral.
Bilbao is easy to walk or cycle around but the public transport is excellent. Take the Artxanda cable car for amazing views or try a Nervion river cruise. Head out to the surrounding mountains for hikes or mountain cycling. Venture slightly further afield to Mundaka, a small fishing town but surfing haven which is home to one of the longest left-hand waves in the world!
Game of Thrones fan? Go to Gaztelugatxe, or dragonstone from the series, for breathtaking scenery.
