1. Unexplored beaches.
If you want to sunbathe, swim or snorkel you will be spoilt for choice. La Calera is the biggest beach on the island and popular with families with its dark volcanic sands. Playa del Ingles is a tranquil naturist beach while Playa de Santiago is the most popular.
2. Sporting activities.
Swimming, snorkelling and diving in the warm, crystal clear waters to boat rental, kayaking and yachting. The south of the island is a golfing hub, while hiking is extremely popular, especially in the northern Garajonay area and Cumbre de Chijere. 3. Authentic culture.
Listen out for the Silbo whistling language, a strand of ancient culture dating to 1000 BC when the Guanches arrived from North Africa and settled in the caves. Used to communicate over long distances, it is estimated 20,000 still know it today. The island is sparsely populated with scattered villages to explore.
Head to Hermigua, an agricultural town in the north, surrounded by banana plantations. Visit the informative ecological Aloe Vera plantation in this region at Finca Canarias. Christopher Columbus lived on the island in the 15th century and set sail from San Sebestian before crossing the Atlantic in 1492. 4. Food & Drink
Satisfy your taste buds with local Canarian food and local wines. Why not try Rancho Canario, a local thick broth made of chick peas, noodles and potatoes? Or almogrote, a paste often spread on toast and made from hard cheese, peppers, olive oil, garlic and other ingredients. The seafood in the eateries near Playa de Santiago is renowned.
