WHY VISIT LANZAROTE?
1. Gorgeous beaches, windsurfing, cycling, trekking & golfing.
With a wide variety of beaches there is a resort to suit all tastes. Puerto de Carmen is the largest and oldest resort with popular sandy beaches, fine dining and a stylish harbour. Check out the sandy beaches at Playa Blanca with its trendy designer shops and lively bars. Costa Teguise is more relaxed with sandy beaches and is popular with windsurfers. Lanzarote is always breezy so it’s popular for a whole range of water sports. Why not drive to the north of the island at Famara or Arrieta for super surf fun?
For divers, try something unique by seeking out Museo Atlantico, Europe’s first underwater museum, with 300 sculptures made from eco- friendly cement which are attracting more marine eco systems. The submarine safari’s go 30 m underwater to shipwrecks and masses of marine life. Lanzarote is less mountainous than the other Canary Islands, and the roads are generally not busy, so it’s an ideal location for land sports. Explore more of Lanzarote by cycling (there are 200km cycling tracks), trekking or hiking. The island also boasts 3 golf courses.
2. Timanfaya National Park/ volcanic landscape
Take a guided bus tour to this unspoilt landscape with craters from more than 100 volcanoes. You can’t explore this park on your own for safety reasons but you can take a guided camel ride! In the small restaurant at the top, try some food cooked by the heat of the volcano. Timanfaya has similar geology to Mars, so much so the crater near the robot landing on Mars is now named Timanfaya! Lanzarote is also home to the longest volcanic tunnel in the world, the 7km Tunel de Atlantida.
3. Culture
You can’t visit the island without witnessing the legacy of the 20th century Lanzaroteno, Cesar
Manrique, a famous artist and environmentalist. He converted underground caves to an
underground auditorium, restaurant, bar and pools, so check out Jameos del Agua. His last
architectural work woven into the landscape is Jardin de Cactus, boasting 4500 species of cacti in the site of a former volcanic quarry. There are acres of vineyards which produce excellent red and white wines so take a tour to La Geria wine region. Head to the bustling capital, Arrecife, for its range of eateries. Why not try delicious fresh fish, papas arrugadas with mojo sauces?
For a more authentic taste of Lanzarote, head to Teguise, the former capital of the island. It’s an important cultural centre with its palaces, convents, artisan shops and cafes, and is also home to a colourful market which is held every Sunday. The place to grab some souvenirs!
