WHY VISIT TENERIFE?
1. Stunning beaches. You will be spoilt for choice! The south of the island is very popular, with some of the finest white, sandy beaches and warm, crystal clear waters. If you want action 24/7 this is the place to go. For a quieter resort, the black volcanic Los Gigantes beach, with its mountain range backdrop is stunning.
2. Sporting activities. Snorkelling, scuba diving, surfing, windsurfing, cycling and caving…you are spoilt for choice. Find time for a wildlife excursion to see abundant marine life including bottle nosed dolphins and whales.
As well as having plenty of golf courses on the island, we also recommend hiking, especially in the Masca Valley…try the stunning 3hr Masca walk through the gorge to the sea.
3. Mount Teide, standing proud at 3715m, is the highest peak in Spain with its last eruption in 1909. Take the cable car which reaches the top in a few minutes or hike up, but make sure you are fully acclimatised and have plenty of water and sun protection. You will see huge boulders of lava rock ejected by the volcano, called Huevos del Teide or Teide’s Eggs.
The volcanic ‘lunar’ landscape is stunning and this national park is also recognised as one of the best star gazing sites in the world.
4. Drive around Tenerife, an island of spectacular scenery and traditional towns.
Discover the capital Santa Cruz, with its stately colonial buildings and shell shaped concert hall, Auditorio de Tenerife then drive through the rugged Anaga Mountains, an outstanding area of natural beauty famed for its laurel forests.
Be sure to visit the oldest dragon tree (over 500 years) at Icod de los Vinos. Above the town is one of the world’s largest lava tunnels, which has a short section open to the public, a great, albeit cold experience!
Next stop is picturesque Masca, where residents used to hide when attacked by pirates and Garachino, which was destroyed twice by volcanic eruptions. Dip your toes into its famous natural bathing pool.
Make a day trip to La Laguna, which is full of palaces, monuments and traditional Canarian houses. This UNESCO town is know as the cultural capital of Tenerife.
We enjoyed our visit to Candelaria, in the SE, an area largely untouched by tourism. Visit the Virgen de Candelaria, the island’s most revered shrine. On the seafront are 9 larger than life bronze statues of the Guanche kings. Be amazed at the ethnographic park in Guimar, Thor Heyerdahl’s replica of Ra II, theories on the 6 stone pyramids and the culture of the aboriginal inhabitants.
