Where are the Maldives?
Situated in the Indian Ocean, 700 kms from mainland Asia, the Maldives is made up of approx 1190 islands and 26 atols, or chains of coral islands. Stunningly beautiful and tranquil, the Maldives is an idyllic and unique once-in-a-lifetime holiday destination and the perfect place to relax. If you want a honeymoon in paradise, couples’ retreat or a holiday with lots of water sport activities, the Maldives is for you.
Start your Maldives holiday!
The Maldives are a 10 to 11 hour flight from the UK. Once you have landed, you then take a boat or water plane to your resort, an impressive experience! Each luxury resort is on its own island which can be easily walked around. Your accommodation could be a luxury beach villa or a garden villa, which is more centrally located. Overwater, there are lavish villas and suites which are built on stilts, and you may also have the option of private pools.
The world class cuisine varies from all-inclusive to B&B and half-board options. We recommend staying all-inclusive.
Swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving in the crystal clear sea with its abundant marine life is extremely popular. Jet skiing, wind surfing, kayaking and SUP are available at particular resorts. Many offer air-conditioned gyms, tennis courts, volleyball, yoga and spas. The resorts have their own evening entertainment, such as the Bodu Bera traditional folk dance. There are various boat trips on offer, such as the sunset, fishing, and dolphin cruises and trips to some other native island resorts, perhaps on dhoni, the traditional wooden boats.
The capital, Male, is based on the hectic and densely populated ‘King’s Island.’ If you want to immerse yourself in the local culture, it’s the place to go for a day trip. Visit the Male Friday mosque, the religious symbol of the islands, as 90 % of the inhabitants are Muslim. The local fruit, vegetable and fish markets must be on your to do list. Escape in Sultan Park away from the hustle and bustle and take a look at the one storey Presidential Palace from the outside and the National Museum.
