Surprisingly, given the name, the Panama hat was actually created near Cuenca. You can see artisans still crafting them today in the city and take a tour of a hat making factory. A panama hat fits nicely into a suitcase, a perfect souvenir to take home! Stop at Plaza San Francisco, home of a vibrant market. See all the colours of the beautiful 'cholas' for sale! These embroided skirts are worn by the local indigenous community.
Walk to the highly photogenic New Cathedral with its striking blue and white domes. Walk inside and pay a small fee to climb to the top, for great views over Cuenca. Spend the afternoon enjoying Ecuadorian art in Cuena's Museum of Modern Art.
