OUR FAVOURITE RAIL JOURNEYS

1. THE ‘BLUE TRAINS’ of SRI LANKA

The 6 ½ hour stunning train ride from Ella to Kandy (and vice versa) is the best on the island and
arguably the best in the world. The iconic Instagram photos of people leaning out of the trains,
(which are not always blue because there is a vintage red train too!), are well documented.

It climbs high into the mountains, passing through local villages and tea plantation country. Vendors sell a range of delicious snacks throughout the journey.
We recommend booking the very affordable tickets, and reserving a seat, in advance. First class is air conditioned but in 2nd class you can open the windows.

The views are stunning on both sides but arguably the left -hand side is best when travelling from Ella to Kandy. The famous Nine Arches Bridge (91m long and 24m high) connects Ella to Demodara station.

Days 1-2: Lima

Stay in the bohemian & artisan district of Barranco.

Enjoy a private guided tour of Lima. Visit the Cathedral, colonial mansions & the ancient clay pyramid of Huaca Pucllana.

Days 3-4: Arequipa & Lake Titicaca on board the wonderful Belmond Andean Explorer

Fly to the White City of Arequipa.   Spend a night on the magnificient Belmond Andean Explorer travelling towards Lake Titicaca.

Full-day tour of the reed islands of Uros and Taquile island on Lake Titicaca.  Spend another night on the historic Andean Explorer as it makes its way to Cusco.

Day 5: Cusco

Arrive at a stunning hotel located in the historic centre of Cusco, high in the Andes. 

Private half-day tour of Cusco and its surroundings, taking in nearby Inca archaelogical sites.

Day 6: Machu Picchu Tour

Leave Cusco on the  Hiram Bingham to make your way to the incredible Machu Picchu, high on an Andean hilltop.  This is something you will never forget!

Stay at the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge which is located at the entrance of Machu Picchu.

Days 7-9: The Sacred Valley

Board the Hiram Bingham one more time, heading to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. 

You will stay at a luxurious hotel in the heart of the valley. Enjoy a full day tour to Pisac Market and the town of Ollantaytambo.

Day 10: LIma

Fly back to Lima for your last night in incredible Peru.

Day 11: Depart Lima

Transfer to Lima airport for your flight back to the UK.
