In the heart of the town you will find Matsumoto-jō, Japan’s oldest wooden castle. The white and black main keep was constructed in 1595; this gave it the nickname Crow Castle. Book a free tour and learn about the history of the castle which exhibits fascinating items and treasures on each level. Make sure you wear warm socks, as you will need to take your shoes off. Before you reach the top you will stumble across the hidden Samurai floor. Afterwards, take a stroll along the riverside with its beautiful houses and make sure to buy a Taiyaki. This tasty waffle-cake, shaped like a fish, is filled with a sweet filling. Try red bean paste or custard!
In the evening the temperature will cool, so a trip to an onsen (Japanese bathing house) is perfect. Many hotels have them. Feel your muscles relax and enjoy the heat. Some are open to the elements giving you the opportunity to gaze up at the stars. One of those memories you won't forget!
