Ayuthaya, Siam’s former royal capital, has temple ruins spread across the city. Wat Mahathat is its most well-known attraction, best explored early to avoid crowds. Look out for a sandstone Buddha head, tangled within a bodhi tree.

Kanchanaburi offers a glimpse of history, with memorials and museums paying tribute to the prisoners of war who built the ‘Death Railway’ during WW2.   A visit to the ‘bridge over the river Kwai is a must-do.  It is also the perfect location to explore the surrounding national parks.

Sangkhlaburi draws in visitors due to its well known wooden bridge, Thailand’s longest. ‘Saphan Mon,’ is 440m long and connects the main town with the Mon Settlement. Canoeing, trekking and shopping are popular pastimes to visitors.

• Dodge the monkeys at Lamburi and visit its famous temple, Prang Sam Yot.
• E-Thong, a border town with Myanmar, surrounded by jungle is the perfect place to enjoy nature.
