Our top 5 reasons to visit:
1. Gorgeous beaches with over 1000 km of coastline.
The northern beaches are generally long, sandy and developed while the southern beaches are secluded, but all offer crystal clear turquoise sea, ideal for swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving. Many of them are ‘Blue Flag.’ Elafonisi and the Bolos lagoon have shallow water ideal for families. Vai has a stunning location next to the only palm forest in Europe. Falasarna has white sand and stunning sunsets.
2. Rich History and Diverse Cultures
Crete has remains from the oldest civilisation in Europe, the MINOANS, at Knossos and Phaistos to Medieval towns, Venetian castles and fortresses to historic monasteries, churches and mosques. You can even visit the ‘birthplace of Zeus’ at the Dictaean Cave!
3. Diverse Natural Landscape
The majestic mountains often have snowy peaks, with Mount Ida (2500m) the highest. Enjoy
spectacular gorges, fertile plains and freshwater Lake Kournas. Plant lovers visit in the spring for the 130 unique plant species, and birdwatchers for the approx. 250 types of birds migrating to the north.
4. Hiking...SAMARIA GORGE...& other sports
The Samaria Gorge is Europe’s longest with 16 km downhill hike (5-6 hours) from the White
Mountains to the beach at Agia Roumelli. An absolutely unforgettable experience not to be
missed!
The E4 European Path has 91 hiking routes over 560 km. It would take 3-4 weeks to do it all but you can do sections of it. Cycling and mountain biking are popular on the island, especially around the picturesque Lasithi plateau. There are also opportunities for extreme sports such as skydiving, paragliding and rock climbing.
5. Cretan Food and Drink
A full range of eateries using fresh local produce, fish and meats are available. Head inland to the mountain villages for good value, authentic Cretan food. Try local cheeses, ‘sfakianes pites’ (cheese pies) and dakos salad, raki and local wines. Crete has 4000 years of wine creation so they know what they’re doing!
