The northern beaches are generally long, sandy and developed while the southern beaches are secluded, but all offer crystal clear turquoise sea, ideal for swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving. Many of them are ‘Blue Flag.’ Elafonisi and the Bolos lagoon have shallow water ideal for families. Vai has a stunning location next to the only palm forest in Europe. Falasarna has white sand and stunning sunsets.

missed! 

The E4 European Path has 91 hiking routes over 560 km. It would take 3-4 weeks to do it all but you can do sections of it.  Cycling and mountain biking are popular on the island, especially around the picturesque Lasithi plateau. There are also opportunities for extreme sports such as skydiving, paragliding and rock climbing.

5. Cretan Food and Drink

A full range of eateries using fresh local produce, fish and meats are available. Head inland to the mountain villages for good value, authentic Cretan food. Try local cheeses, ‘sfakianes pites’ (cheese pies) and dakos salad, raki and local wines. Crete has 4000 years of wine creation so they know what they’re doing!

Day 1: Heraklion

Enjoy an evening walk around the town with your guide.

Day 2: Knossos & Agios Ioannis

Head to the archaelogical site of Knossos and immerse yourself in its ancient history.  Spend the evening in a traditional village, enjoy the traditional music. (Breakfast & dinner included)

Day 3: Sougia

Board a private boat to Sougia. Enjoy being off the main tourist trail & relax in this peaceful seaside village. (Breakfast)

Day 4:

Head to Agia Irini and enjoy a hike through the gorge (about 3 hours) with your guide. Spend your afternoon In Sougia. (Breakfast)

Day 5:

On arrival enjoy a walk around Chania with your guide.  Spend the rest of the day as you choose, maybe go shopping in the local markets. (Breakfast)

Day 6:

Take part in a Cretan pastry workshop! Then in the afternoon enjoy a wine tasting session with your group at a local vineyard. (Breakfast)

Day 7:

Free time in Chania. Flight home.
