Chora: Whitewashed Streets & Lively Evenings

The island’s main town, Chora (Hora), is a maze of whitewashed houses, winding lanes, little churches and inviting cafés.

During the day, wander through its narrow streets, stop for a leisurely lunch or find a viewpoint overlooking the island. As evening approaches, enjoy the sunset before the town’s bars and clubs come to life.

Ios is particularly well known for its nightlife during the summer, but you don’t have to make that the focus of your holiday. Staying in a quieter area or travelling outside the busiest weeks offers a different experience of the island.

Beautiful Beaches & Secluded Bays

Ios has beaches to suit different styles of holiday, from lively stretches of sand to quieter bays.

Mylopotas Beach is one of the island’s best-known beaches, with swimming, beachside restaurants and a range of watersports.

For a more peaceful day by the sea, explore Manganari Bay, known for its sandy beaches and clear water, or discover the quieter surroundings of Psathi and Agia Theodoti.

A beach-hopping day is a wonderful way to discover more of the island beyond your chosen resort.  

Around Mylopotas, you can look for activities such as paddleboarding, kayaking, windsurfing and diving, subject to local availability and conditions.

Boat trips are another way to discover the island’s coastline, including bays and coves that are less easily reached by road.

Ancient History & Island Heritage

There is more to Ios than its beaches and nightlife.

Visit Skarkos, an important Early Bronze Age archaeological site, to discover a fascinating part of the island’s ancient history. You can also explore the Archaeological Museum in Chora.

Ios is traditionally associated with the poet Homer, and visitors can explore the site known as Homer’s Tomb. The island also has hilltop churches, monasteries and the remains of a Venetian fortress at Paleokastro.

These sites offer a different perspective on Ios and are well worth considering if you enjoy exploring beyond the beach.
