1. Sensational beaches
There are a huge choice of beautiful beaches and bays...white sand or pebbles, busy or
secluded, with many awarded the Blue Flag and some with watersports. Popular Makris Gialos
has golden sand. Myrtos is famous but can be dangerous when rough. Antisammos is popular
and pebbly and Skala perfect for families. Lourdas is calm with white sand while Spartia doesn’t get busy. There is even a waterpark at Kounopetra.
2. Picturesque villages / harbours / historic sites
The earthquake of 1953 destroyed a lot of Kefalonia’s Venetian heritage with Fiskardo the only
village left standing and so retaining much of its original architecture. Today it is an exclusive,
upmarket, beautiful and very busy harbour village. Skala is one of the liveliest spots on the island with its sunset cocktail bars and music clubs. Explore the ruins of its 3rd century Roman villa. The ancient city of Sami has remains of a theatre, bath and acropolis. Head to the citadel of Assos for amazing views and don’t forget the ruins of the medieval 12th century castle of St George, in the region of Livatho. The stalagtites and stalagmites in Drogarti caves are a popular attraction as is Melissani sea cave.

As well as swimming and snorkelling there are other activities available... scuba diving, jet skiing, waterskiing, canoeing, wakeboarding and SUP off Xi, Skala and Antisamos beaches. Hire or take a boat trip to the nearby islands of ITHACA and VARDIANI. Perhaps you want to try Bavarian horse riding or hike up Mt Ainos, standing proud at 1628m, for amazing views?
4. Food and drink
Kefalonia if famed for its local wine, in particular the dry white Robola. Kreatopita is its famous meat pie. Fritters made of salt cod and freshly caught and cooked seafood are other popular food choices. Kefalonia also produces its own feta cheese and honey scented with thyme. Try Riganata (feta cheese, bread, oil and oregano).
5. Flora and fauna
The interior of the island if full of oak forests and vineyards. The island is also home to unique white branches on fir trees and an abundance of spring flowers. Catch a glimpse of wild horses and monk seals. Kefalonia is also the nesting ground for loggerhead sea turtles, especially in Skala and Argostoli.
