1. Stunning beaches
With 120km of coastline there is a beach to suit you, from secluded and deserted coves to beaches which are excellent for watersports. The aptly named Golden beach near Parikia is the longest in the island and excellent for watersports and is family friendly.
The Pounda area is well known for kitesurfing while the actual beach is known as the party beach! Sandy Kolymbithres is well known for its eroded rock formations and with its shallow, turquoise waters is popular with families. And then you have secret Agios Fokas...

Parikia, the capital and main port, with its iconic large windmill and remains of 13th century Venetian castle, has many boutiques, lively bars, cafes and restaurants in the Old Town and places which sell art, pottery and locally made jewellery. Visit the street markets every morning except Sundays, for a range of local produce.
Naoussii is an old fishing town...if you get up early you will see the fishing boats (caiques) bring in their catch! With its 15th century Venetian fortress and traditional architecture, it is a popular place to visit with luxury hotels, restaurants and shops and a lively nightlife. Visit rural villages on the cliff tops, such as Lefkes with its traditional architecture.
4. Food and drink
There are a full range of eateries on the island, offering traditional Greek dishes to more cosmopolitan options. Try Gouno, the popular sun-dried mackerel often seen hanging outside in the sun, and Mizithra, the island’s goat cheese. Freshly caught and cooked seafood and Mezedes in local cafes and tavernas are a must. Red, white and Malvasia (dessert) wines are all produced on the island. How about a tour and tasting at Moraitis winery, the oldest and most important on the island...
5. Historical monuments
There are a many museums, churches, ancient monasteries and ruins to visit on the island. The Monastery of Panagia Ekatontapiliani in Parikia, or ‘church with 100 doors’ is a stunning historic Byzantine church complex, which also houses an archaeological museum. You can even tour the ancient marble quarries in Marathi.
