WHY VISIT SANTORINI?
1. Stunning scenery...photographer’s dream!
The island is the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history 3,600 years ago! This eruption may have led to the fall of Minoan civilisation and probably gave rise to the Atlantis legend.
The middle of the island collapsed with the eruption forming a caldera, with most of Santorini now built on top of a section of the caldera’s rim, as is the beautiful capital, Fira. This capital can be reached from the port by cable car, 220m up, by donkey or by walking up 100’s of steps! There are many beautiful white washed villages to explore on the island, with almost every house having their own white chapel with distinct sky blue dome.
2. Sunsets...best in the world?
Crowds gather at Oia town in the north, to watch the famous sunsets. Firostefani has far fewer people watching this spectacular sight.
3. Beaches and watersports
The island’s volcanic beaches are unique, ranging from black, red, beige to white with tranquil blue waters. Perissa and Kamari are popular and have a variety of watersports: scuba diving, water skiing, jet skiing, wind kiting, banana boats. They are lined with bars and restaurants. Baxedes and Monolithos are both popular with families. For something different, take a boat trip to the completely unspoilt Isle of Therasia.
4. Top Food and drink destination
Santorini is a top class food destination which uses produce grown on the island’s rich, volcanic soil, such as white aubergines, tomatoes, fava beans and pomegranates. Try the freshly caught seafood, spanakopita, fava dip and chlorotin local cheese ... with delicious local wines. Why not go on a wine tasting tour at one of the island’s vineyards?
5. Go back in time...
Visit the Akrotiri Archaeological site, often called the ‘Greek Pompeii’ because this site was also covered in volcanic ash. It’s considered one of the most important prehistoric sites in the Aegean. Hike up Mesa Vouna for an hour, then see the settlement of Ancient Thira. For recent history, visit the ghost town of ‘Mesa Gonia’ which was abandoned after the earthquake of 1965.
