Syros...'Queen of the Aegean’
Would you like to visit a Greek island with a capital that oozes Greek culture and history, has very good eateries and is renowned for its summer festivals? Syros (Siros, Syra) may be a small Cyclades island in the Aegean, but it is ideal as a base for island hopping to MYKONOS, TINOS, SANTORINI and PAROS, which all have excellent ferry links.
Surrounded by many good ‘Blue Flag’ beaches, and a rural landscape outside of the capital waiting to be explored, Syros is the ideal location to relax and embed yourself in authentic everyday Greek life. Food and accommodation are also good value for money compared to other more touristy Greek islands, making Syros popular with families and couples.

WHY VISIT SYROS?
1. Capital of Cyclades Islands...ERMOUPOLI
Sophisticated Ermoupoli is a vibrant town and the administrative capital of the Cyclades. Buzzing with life all year round, it is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s surrounded by two mountains: Vrontado with a Greek Orthodox church and Ano Syros with a Catholic church.
Medieval Ano Syros, with its white cube-like architecture has stunning views from the top of St George cathedral. The architecture of Ermoupoli is a photographer’s delight...with its marble paved square, neo-classical buildings, such as the impressive Town Hall and stunning Apollen Theatre. Head to the Vaporia Quarter for Venetian mansions dating from 19th century. Ermoupoli is renowned for its summer festivals...listen out for the local music Rebetiko, described as Greek Blues, which originated on the island.
2. Beaches
The most popular beaches are on the South side of the island, with the sea generally shallow.
The sandy beach at Galissas is family friendly, pebbly Delfini is larger while Kini is popular with families and renowned for its sunsets...there are many more beaches waiting to be explored.
3. Food and drink
There are very good restaurants and tavernas on the island, particularly in Ermoupoli, using
fresh, local produce and fresh seafood. Try San Michalis cheese, louza sausages, loukoumi
(Greek take on Turkish delight) and sip tsipouro spirit.
4. Exploring historical rural areas outside of the capital
The north of the island is rugged where you can drive, bike or walk, whereas the south is gentler. Checkout the acropolis of Chalandrian and 45 mins away the prehistoric site at Kastri. Hike or take a sightseeing boat to the Bay of Letters where shipwrecked sailors carved letters (wishes, prayers, names) into the rock, most dating to Roman and Byzantine times.
5. Activities
Swimming, surf school, scuba diving, horse riding, walking and cycling are the most important activities on Syros.
