Paracas & Islas Ballestas
Spend a couple of nights at the seaside town of Paracas, which has lots of eateries and shops to choose from. From here board a boat to the Islas Ballestas, also known as the Peruvian Galapagos. This region has some of the most nutrient rich waters of the world. Witness seals and sea lions basking on the rocks and photograph the endangered Humboldt penguins nesting on the island. From a distance you may wonder what all the ‘specks’ on the island are; get close and you will realise it’s thousands of birds nesting. Look out for the striking geoglyph of a candelabra, said to be a navigation helper or a pirate’s sign.
A highlight of our travels was hiring a dune buggy for the day and whizzing to Reserva Nacional de Paracas with a tour guide. This protected piece of coast offers soaring cliffs, incredible views, undulating sand dunes and is a habitat for many mammals and birds. Stop for a local fish lunch at the hamlet of Lagunillas.
Visit Nazca. We can map out your perfect Peruvian holiday and book a flight over the Nazca lines for you.
You may think the desert is completely barren, but that isn’t the case. The green oasis of Huacachina (near Ica) majestically appears before you. The surrounding rolling sand dunes are the place to surf the sand on a wooden board or a dune buggy, a memorable and exhilarating experience. Afterwards, how about a Pisco brandy tour? Hire a taxi and have an afternoon at the artisan Pisco Bodegas. This clear grape brandy is the base ingredient of the famous Peruvian cocktail, the Pisco Sour.
Take a flight over the Nazca Lines
Marvel at the Nazca Lines, one of Earth’s greatest mysteries, whose purpose has yet to be determined. These 2000 year old geoglyphs (animals, patterns, shapes and lines) are etched into the desert near the town of Nazca. Take a flight over this UNESCO site to get a bird’s eye view; look out for the hummingbird, spider, monkey and astronaut/alien!
Nearby is the Cementerio de Chauchilla, graves containing mummies, dating back from AD 1000-1400. 12 of these graves have been restored, unfortunately, tomb raiders have taken any riches that were originally there. A bizarre setting to visit, but an interesting one.
