  1. Pisac 35km from Cusco

  • Hike up to this lesser visited Inca citadel & military outpost from the town.  Walk amongst temples, tunnels and agricultural terraces.  Falcons will soar in the sky above you.

  • Browse the market town of Pisac.  Make sure you visit on a market day, Sunday is the biggest market day.

  1. Ollantaytambo 97km from Cusco

  • Pronounced ‘oh-yahn-tai-tam-boh’.  Climb the steps to the top of the fortress and temple to admire this superb Inca stonework, fountains & irrigation channels.  Learn about the fascinating history of this town and how the Incas used the water channels to their advantage against the Spanish. 

  1. Chinchero 28km from Cusco

  • Ruins of an Inca country resort used for royalty lie in this fertile valley. Visit the beautiful church that sits on top of these ruins, with the mountain peak of Salkantay in the distance. 

  • Famous weaving town with a fabulous market to explore (3 x’s a week). 

  1. Salinas de Maras 50km from Cusco.

  • Take a tour to the salt pans which have been used since Incan times.  Hundreds of miners still extract salt from here.  There are tourist stands at the top, but you will have the opportunity to walk between the pans.  A beautiful and unusual sight to see.

  1. Moray (reached via Salinas de Maras)

  • This is a very impressive and unusual spectacle to walk around.  Each layer of the Inca 'ampitheatre' has different conditions for growing crops. Fascinating!

  1. Tipon 22km from Cusco

  • A lesser visited, well preserved site situated high in the mountain tops.   An uphill walk of about 45 minutes will bring you to terraces, fountains, water channels and a defensive wall. 

  1. San Pedro de Andahuaylillas 36km from Cusco

  • This 17th century church might not seem that impressive at first glance, but wait until you walk through the door! Stare up at the gleaming gold leaf ceiling. 

  1. Pikillaqta Ruins 30km from Cusco

  • Catch a taxi to this pre-Incan site that was first inhabited by the Wari.  Also known as the ‘city of fleas’, there are plenty of mud & stone buildings to explore.

  • The nearby Incan gates of Rumicola were used as a Cusco checkpoint. 

  1. Raqchi 73km from Cusco

  • 12m high walls remain, as well as circular silos that were used to store food. 

  • Mud & stone 15th century temple.

  1. Tambomachay Tour-close to Cusco

  • Fancy a day trip closer to Cusco? You can even do this 16km route on horse back!

  • See rocks that have channels carved into them for sacrificed llama blood to flow.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Lima

Day 2: Walking tour of Lima then a domestic flight to Cusco.

Day 3: Walking tour around the Sacred Valley. (Around 6 hours)

Day 4: A mountain biking adventure around the Sacred Valley. 

Day 5: Start the Inca Trail at the 82km mark.  Follow the winding path next to the Urubamba river until you reach the Inca ruins of Llactapata.  Climb up the valley to your first camp (3100m) .

Day 6-7: The path climbs steeply uphill past vibrant forests to the meadows at Llulluchapampa.  It's then a tough 3 hour climb to Dead Woman's Pass (4200m).  After admiring the spectacular views from the highest point of the trail, descend towards your camp for the night.

The next morning start climbing up the original Inca steps, past lagoons and Inca ruins.

Admire striking vistas on the mighty Salkantay mountain.

Day 8: Machu Picchu A guided tour of this once in a lifetime site!

Day 9: Board a train back to Cusco. 

Day 10: Guided tour of Cusco.

Day 11: White water rafting in Apurimac Canyon, one of the top 10 rafting rivers in the world.  No experience is needed.

Day 12: Fly to Lima and onwards to the UK.
