What Does a Day in the Galapagos Look Like?

Days tend to start early. That's when temperatures are cooler and wildlife can be particularly active.

After breakfast, you may board a Zodiac and head ashore with your naturalist guide.

Later, there might be time to snorkel, kayak or explore another landing site.

Back onboard, evenings are usually relaxed. Your expedition team will brief you on the next day's plans and explain more about the wildlife, geology and conservation of the islands.

Seven-night voyages are popular and give you time to experience several islands and habitats. Longer itineraries can offer more depth and a wider range of landing sites.

Is the Galapagos good for a first expedition cruise?

Yes. It's a brilliant introduction to expedition travel if you enjoy wildlife and active days. There is a strong focus on landings, snorkelling and naturalist-led exploration.

Do I need to be very fit?

No, but a reasonable level of mobility helps. You may need to get in and out of Zodiacs, manage wet or dry landings and walk over uneven volcanic terrain. Activity levels vary by itinerary.

Which Galapagos expedition ship is best?

There isn't one ship we'd recommend to everybody. We'll look at the itinerary, ship size, cabin style, comfort, activities and your budget before narrowing down the options.

Can I combine the Galapagos with mainland Ecuador?

Absolutely. Quito is a natural addition. You could also combine the islands with the Amazon, cloud forest or a longer journey through Ecuador and South America.
