Which Country Is Best for a First Safari?

For a first safari, we'd often start by looking at Kenya or South Africa.

Kenya offers that classic safari experience many people have imagined for years. Think open plains, big cats, elephants and beautiful tented camps.

The Maasai Mara is one of its biggest draws. Kenya also works well if you'd like to add time on the coast afterwards.

South Africa offers something different. It's easy to combine safari with Cape Town, the Winelands or the Garden Route.

The Kruger area has excellent private reserves and a wide choice of lodges. There are also malaria-free safari areas elsewhere in the country.

If you want safari to be part of a wider holiday, South Africa can work particularly well.

Kenya or Tanzania for the Great Migration?

Both can be fantastic.

The Great Migration moves through the Serengeti and Maasai Mara ecosystem. Huge herds of wildebeest and zebra follow the rains and fresh grazing.

Tanzania gives you access to the vast Serengeti. You can also combine it with the Ngorongoro Crater and other wildlife areas.

Kenya's Maasai Mara is famous for the dramatic river crossings. These are often associated with July to September.

But nature doesn't work to an exact calendar. River crossings are never guaranteed.

If the migration is your priority, we'd look at where the herds are likely to be during your travel dates.

What About Botswana?

Botswana is a wonderful choice if you want wilderness, smaller camps and fewer vehicles.

The Okavango Delta is particularly special. Depending on the location and water levels, you might explore by 4x4, boat or traditional mokoro.

Chobe is also famous for its elephants. Other areas offer an even more remote safari experience.

There is a trade-off. Botswana can be expensive.

Many itineraries involve small aircraft between camps. That adds to the experience, but also to the price.

If privacy and wilderness are high on your list, Botswana is certainly worth considering.

And Zambia?

Zambia can suit travellers who want a more adventurous safari.

South Luangwa is particularly well known for walking safaris. It offers the chance to experience the bush from a completely different perspective.

Zambia can feel less polished than some luxury safari destinations. For many travellers, that's part of its appeal.

We'd consider it for someone who values wildlife, guiding and a strong sense of wilderness.

What If Scenery Is Just as Important as Wildlife?

Take a look at Namibia.

Namibia isn't simply about seeing the highest number of animals. The landscapes are a huge part of the experience.

You can combine wildlife in Etosha with desert scenery, enormous open spaces and places such as Sossusvlei.

It's also a fantastic road-trip destination.

If you want your safari to feel like a wider adventure, Namibia could be a great fit.

Which Safari Country Suits Your Travel Style?

These aren't rules. They're simply useful starting points.

The right lodge, reserve and season can matter just as much as the country itself.

What Else Should You Think About?

Timing makes a big difference.

Dry season can make wildlife easier to spot. Green season can bring beautiful scenery, birdlife and better value.

Your accommodation matters too.

You might want a small tented camp in the bush. Or perhaps you'd prefer a lodge with a pool and plenty of comfort between game drives.

Then there is the pace of your trip. Moving between several camps can show you more. Staying longer in one place can feel much more relaxed.

We'd start with you, rather than the country.

What wildlife would you love to see? How much do you want to spend? Do you want luxury or something more adventurous?

We'd also ask what else you'd like to include.

Perhaps it's a few days in Cape Town. Maybe it's a beach stay in Zanzibar. Or perhaps you want the safari itself to be the whole adventure.

Once we know that, choosing the right country becomes much easier.

That's why we don't think there is one 'best' safari country. There is a safari that fits you best.
