Kilimanjaro Marangu Route
The Kilimanjaro Route With Mountain Huts
The Marangu Route, also known as the Coca-Cola Route, offers a different way to experience Mount Kilimanjaro.
Unlike the mountain's other main trekking routes, Marangu uses mountain huts rather than tented camps, with overnight stays at Mandara, Horombo and Kibo. This is a route we know from personal experience.
Nicola from Mapping Your Travel has trekked the Marangu Route herself, experiencing life on the mountain, the changing landscapes and the challenge of climbing towards Africa's highest summit. After her trek, Nicola also enjoyed a day safari in Tanzania, experiencing two very different sides of the country in one memorable adventure.
Whether you're considering your first major trek or planning a bucket-list challenge, we can help arrange your Kilimanjaro journey, including flights, accommodation, transfers, experienced local guides and an optional safari or Zanzibar extension.

What Makes the Marangu Route Different?
-
Mountain hut accommodation: Stay in basic huts at Mandara, Horombo and Kibo rather than sleeping in tents.
-
An established trekking route: Follow a well-defined trail through Kilimanjaro's changing landscapes.
-
Time to acclimatise: A longer itinerary can include an additional night at Horombo before continuing higher.
-
Experienced local mountain team: Trek with local guides and support staff who know the mountain.
-
The return journey: Descend along the same route, experiencing the landscapes from a different perspective.
Although Marangu is sometimes described as a more straightforward route, climbing Kilimanjaro remains a demanding high-altitude challenge. Choosing a suitable itinerary and allowing time to acclimatise are important considerations.

That first-hand experience means you can talk to us about the practical side of the adventure, including the mountain huts, daily walking, altitude, summit night and what to expect from the itinerary.
We have also arranged Kilimanjaro treks for clients, so we can help you plan the wider journey around your climb.

Example Marangu Route Itinerary
This example includes an additional night at Horombo for acclimatisation. Exact walking times, accommodation and arrangements will depend on your chosen operator, itinerary and conditions on the mountain.

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you'll be met and transferred to your hotel near Moshi. Settle in, meet your trekking team and prepare for the adventure ahead.
Day 2: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Approx. 1,830m to 2,700m | Walking time: 4–5 hours
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins at Marangu Gate before heading into the mountain's lush rainforest.
Follow the trail towards Mandara Hut, where you'll spend your first night on the mountain.
Depending on the itinerary and conditions, there may also be an opportunity to explore the area around Maundi Crater.

Day 3: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Approx. 2,700m to 3,720m | Walking time: 5–7 hours
Continue upwards as the landscape changes from rainforest to heath and moorland.
On a clear day, enjoy views towards Mawenzi and Kibo before arriving at Horombo Hut.
Day 4: Acclimatisation at Horombo
Spend another night at Horombo, allowing additional time to adjust to the altitude before continuing higher.
Your itinerary may include an acclimatisation walk before returning to Horombo for the night.
Day 5: Horombo to Kibo Hut
Approx. 3,720m to 4,700m | Walking time: 6–8 hours
Cross the vast Kibo-Mawenzi Saddle, where the landscape becomes increasingly stark and lunar-like.
Arrive at Kibo Hut, eat and rest before the early-hours summit attempt.

Day 6: Summit Day - Uhuru Peak
Uhuru Peak: 5,895m
Summit day usually begins during the night.
Climb towards Gilman's Point on the crater rim before continuing towards Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Kilimanjaro and in Africa.
After your summit attempt, begin the long descent towards Horombo Hut, where you'll spend the night.
Day 7: Horombo to Marangu Gate
Your final descent takes you back through Kilimanjaro's changing landscapes towards Marangu Gate.
From here, transfer back to your hotel for a well-earned shower, a good meal and some rest.
And perhaps a celebratory beer, you've earned it!

What's Included in Your Marangu Trek?
Your exact inclusions will depend on the itinerary and operator we arrange for you, but your Kilimanjaro package can include international flights, airport transfers, accommodation before and after the trek, experienced local guides and mountain support staff, park and hut fees, meals during the trek, and transfers between your hotel and the mountain.
We'll confirm the full inclusions, itinerary and applicable financial protection in your individual quotation.
How Much Does the Marangu Route Cost?
The cost of a Kilimanjaro trek varies depending on your travel dates, flights, number of trekking days, accommodation, group size and any additional experiences.
We can provide a current quotation for your preferred itinerary, including a safari or Zanzibar extension if you'd like to explore more of Tanzania.
Marangu, Machame or Another Route?
Marangu is a good option to explore if you prefer mountain hut accommodation rather than camping, but it isn't the only way to climb Kilimanjaro.
